About the Company

PKP Intercity is the largest Polish rail operator that connects the centres of large towns and cities and popular tourist resorts in Poland, and enables comfortable travel across Europe. Every day the carrier starts approximately 400 trains.

In 2015, PKP Intercity completed its rolling stock investment programme for the amount of nearly PLN 5.5 billion. As part of the projects, new Pendolino, FLIRT3 and PesaDART trains were purchased. In September 2016, the carrier developed a new rolling stock strategy for 2016-2020, with provides for a planned investment of approximately PLN 2.5 billion in rolling stock and technical facilities. In December 2017, an update of the aforementioned strategy was adopted for 2016 – 2020, with a perspective until 2023. The total expenditure on its implementation will amount to over PLN 7 billion.

As part of the rolling stock strategy “PKP Intercity – The Railway of Big Investments”, the Company will purchase and modernise cars, locomotives, electric multiple units and rebuild holding stations. Once the company completes the biggest investment programme in its history, trains will be set up in nearly 80 percent of new or modernised rolling stock. Moreover, approximately 80 percent of the passenger rolling stock will be equipped with electric sockets, in 94 percent of the rolling stock passengers will enjoy air conditioning, while in at least 77 percent of the rolling stock travellers will be provided with wireless Internet access. Furthermore, each train is to feature a wheelchair-accessible area and a space for bicycles.

In total, as part of the strategy until 2023, PKP Intercity will modernise over 700 cars and purchase 185 new ones. These will include compartment and non-compartment rail units, 1 and 2 class, dining and bicycle transport units or COMBI multifunction cars. Passengers will also benefit from 12 new and 14 modernised electric multiple units. PKP Intercity will also purchase 118 electric locomotives (single and multi-system) and internal combustion locomotives, and will modernise nearly 200 electric and internal combustion locomotives (EU/EP07, EP08 and SM42). Part of locomotives, cars and EMUs will be adapted to the speed of 200 km/h. The strategy also provides for the modernisation of holding stations.

More than 46.1 million passengers travelled on PKP Intercity trains in 2018, an increase of almost 8% compared to 2017. At that time 42.8 million passengers used the carrier’s services. In 2017, in turn, the number of PKP Intercity passengers was as much as 4.3 million more compared to 2016, when the carrier transported 38.5 million passengers. And in 2019, PKP Intercity’s trains have already been chosen by nearly 49 million passengers, which is an increase of nearly 57% compared to 2015.
