Zakopane

Zakopane is Poland's most famous mountain resort and the gateway to the spectacular Tatra Mountains, the highest mountain range in the country. Beautiful landscapes, outdoor activities, and a unique regional culture attract visitors throughout the year, making Zakopane one of Poland's most popular tourist destinations.

The town is an ideal destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. In summer, visitors can explore hundreds of kilometres of hiking trails leading to mountain lakes, valleys, and peaks. Popular attractions include Morskie Oko, one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Europe, and Kasprowy Wierch, which offers breathtaking views of the Tatras. In winter, Zakopane becomes Poland's leading ski destination, with numerous ski slopes and winter sports facilities. Zakopane is also famous for its unique highlander culture. Visitors should stroll along Krupówki, the town's lively main street, filled with shops, restaurants, and traditional markets. The local cuisine is another highlight, with regional specialities such as oscypek, a smoked sheep's milk cheese, and kwaśnica, a traditional sauerkraut soup. The distinctive Zakopane architectural style, developed by Stanisław Witkiewicz, can be admired throughout the town and explored in local museums. Zakopane is a great base for exploring southern Poland by train. Direct rail connections link the town with Cracow in around 2 hours and Warsaw in approximately 5 hours. Longer direct services also make it possible to reach Gdańsk in about 7.5 hours and Szczecin in around 10 hours.

Although Zakopane does not have direct international train connections, it is easy to reach from abroad via Cracow. Frequent trains between Cracow and Zakopane provide convenient access for travellers arriving on international services from many major European cities.
