Transporting dogs, cats and other pets
All you need to know if you want to travel with your dog, cat, guinea pig or other pet by train - how, on which trains and at what price? As an owner, you should take care of your pet while travelling - find out what you need to remember about.
Remember that most animals are not fond of long travels - they often feel insecure or just want to discover new nooks and crannies. Therefore, when taking your cat, dog or other pets on a train trip, provide them with a suitable transport box for the entire duration of the trip.
Remember that the transport box must ensure your pet stays inside it and protect it from harming people or property. The transport box should be positioned in a place for hand luggage or kept on your knees to make the animal feel safe.
What other rules to follow to avoid stressing both other passengers and pets?
Fees due
You can transport using PKP Intercity trains only small house pets (including dogs) free of charge, provided that they do not cause nuisance to other travellers (due to, for instance, noise, smell, etc.). For transportation, they must be securely placed in appropriate boxes (be it a cage, container or basket).
If you travel with a dog that is not in the transport box, then you must:
- purchase a dog travel ticket. The fee for such a ticket is a flat-rate fee and is PLN 15.20,
- keep the dog on a leash and muzzle it for the entire trip,
- have a valid certificate of rabies vaccination for your dog.
Please remember that if there are protests from other passengers due to the presence your animal in a compartment, you must take another seat or ask the ticket inspector to indicate one.
Places where animals are prohibited to enter
Animals like to explore the world and they usually do it in a very spontaneous way, and their owners should know that. Even if you are sure that your pet is calm - please remember that travelling is a completely new situation for a cat or dog. So even the most calm dogs and cats cannot be allowed to some places. In trains, animal are not allowed to be in:
- restaurant cars - except for guide dogs or assistance dogs for the disabled;
- on a seat;
- on a bed in sleeping car (WL):
- on a berth in couchette car (Bc) .
I don't have a ticket for the transport of a dog - what should I do?
If you failed to buy a ticket before your trip, you can do it on the train at the ticket inspector.
We would like to remind you that when buying a ticket from the ticket inspector, in addition to the fee for transporting a dog, we charge a boarding fee of 10 PLN.
However, if you do not comply with the relevant pet transport provisions, then - in addition to an optional fee for transporting the dog - we will charge an extra fee due under the ordinance of the Ministry of Infrastructure of 20 January 2005.
