Over 500k Ukrainian citizens traveled by PKP Intercity trains

Already over 500k Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war have traveled free of charge on PKP Intercity trains across the country. Nearly 233k refugees traveled by rail from border areas in various directions of Poland, mainly to Warsaw, Cracow, Wrocław and Katowice. Among foreign destinations, most people choose to travel to Berlin.

Railway operations between Poland and Ukraine continue. Together with Ukrainian Railways, PKP Intercity maintains rail connections to Kyiv, Lviv and Odessa. In recent days, trains from the cities of Dnieper, Zaporozhye, Kryvyi Rih and Kharkiv have also reached Poland. Travelers arrived at stations in Przemyśl, Chełm, Hrubieszów and Warsaw, where they receive the necessary help, food and information about further transport options. Since February 24, nearly 233k refugees traveled by rail from border areas in various directions of Poland, mainly to Warsaw, Cracow, Wrocław and Katowice.

Between February 24 and March 13 this year a total of nearly 564 trains departed as a part of the effort, including 310 extended regular service trains, 116 additional trains operated by PKP Intercity and 138 trains operated by regional carriers. The use of the rolling stock of regional carriers is coordinated by PKP Intercity.

In order to ensure the greatest efficiency of journeys and to enable the travel of as many people as possible, from February 24 to March 13, the company deployed 2,092 additional wagons to 657 permanent trains running throughout the country.

More free of charge trains to Germany

Since March 9 until further notice, all PKP Intercity trains going from Warsaw, Przemyśl (via Cracow) and Gdynia to Berlin and Frankfurt on the Oder run in the InterCity (IC) category, which provides Ukrainian citizens with the possibility of free travel in the 2nd class. Moreover, the carrier, in cooperation with the German Railways, has launched an additional connection for refugees to Hanover. Since March 12, trains will leave Krakow at 23:00 on Saturdays, Mondays and Thursdays. On March 11, a special train went from Warsaw to Munich.

Up-to-date information and safe travels

Since 28th of February there is a special PKP Intercity helpline in Ukrainian. This is a dedicated number for Ukrainian citizens who want to obtain information in their native language on the PKP Intercity timetable and other passenger issues. The line is available 7 days a week, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at +48 22 473 00 86 (call fee dependent on operator’s tariff) and 800 033 022 (toll-free line for all domestic operators). Information is also available on PKP Intercity website in two language versions – Polish and Ukrainian.

PKP Intercity employees are present at stations, including Przemyśl, Lublin or Warsaw, where they coordinate the passenger transport, passenger streams and boardings. Support is also provided by mobile guides and volunteers who provide refugees with the necessary information also in Ukrainian. At stations, safety is ensured by appropriate services. Officers of the Railroad Guards and the Police are also present on selected PKP Intercity trains.
